Baker silent fantasy romantic love triangle melodrama ("Balzac's Story"; based on the story "La peau de chagrin" by Honore de Balzac; about a poet who is sponsored by a rich Russian Countess and becomes successful, but then she rejects him, but then he acquires a "magic skin", which is a piece of leather, that is like a "monkey's paw" or "Aladdin's lamp", and that makes him super successful, but he uses his powers to destroy the woman who rejected him, and he is about to kill himself in grief over the woman, but an old girlfriend appears and saves him) starring George Walsh (brother of director Raoul Walsh!), Bessie Love, Carmel Myers, Wally Van, and Edward Connelly. Note that it seems that this early silent fantasy movie is virtually completely forgotten today, but it obviously has a very similar plot to "The Monkey's Paw", which came a decade later (and Balzac's source novel was written in 1831, while the source novel for The Monkey's Paw was written in 1902). Also note that George Walsh was a major silent star (and brother of director Raoul Walsh). Click on his name to learn about his fascinating career, and why you likely have never heard of him!
