An Autographed 3" x 6" [8 x 15 cm] Index Card (Learn More) Richard Arlen was born Sylvanus Richard Van Mattimore in 1899 and was a pilot in the Royal Canadian Flying Corps in World War I, but he never saw action. After the war, it took him several years to find himself, and he was discovered by Hollywood in the early 1920s, but it still took him several years of very minor roles (many uncredited) before he got his big break as one of the leads in "Wings" in 1927. He became a lead star, and had no trouble with the transition to sound, but his career went downhill in the late 1930s. He became deaf at the end of the 1940s, but an operation restored his hearing, and he continued in movies into the 1960s. He passed away in 1976 at the age of 76. Important Added Info: This index card has been personally autographed (signed) by Richard Arlen! The index card could be matted with a vintage or repro still and framed together to make a cool display! Our consignor is a longtime collector and dealer. In the 1970s and 1980s, he wrote to stars and asked for autographed photos and index cards, and he also sometimes purchased signed items from other dealers. He does not have a certificate of authenticity for this item, but we believe the signature to likely be authentic. As is true of all the signed items we are currently auctioning, we give every buyer 30 days in which to review what they purchased and they can return any item as long as it is within 30 days of the end of the auction.
