A Linenbacked Special Poster (measures 24 1/4" x 37 3/4" [62 x 96 cm]) (Learn More)

Happy Childhood the World Over, the 1919 poster ("Join the Junior Red Cross") encouraging people to join the Red Cross, and featuring Anna Milo Upjohn artwork of a girl flying a kite with other children in the background. Note that Inglis Fletcher created the Junior Red Cross (which you likely never heard of) in 1917, through a proclamation from President Woodrow Wilson, shortly after the U.S. entered World War I. It encouraged U.S. children to "do without", so that they could better understand how the suffering child victims of World War I felt (especially in Belgium). In 1918, it stated that it wanted to teach "the boys and girls of this country to eat less candy and give up sweet drinks", and we know how incredibly well that worked out! The children would also knit scarves and work in victory gardens and raise money for WWI orphans.
Artist: Anna Milo Upjohn
Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this poster!

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster was never machine folded, but it had a few creases and small tears scattered down the center, with small paper loss in the top left corner and a few small tears in the rest of the borders. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well!
