The American Federation of Labor was the national federation of labor unions in the U.S., founded in 1886. An alternate organization, the C.I.O. (Congress of Industrial Organizations) was formed in 1935 to include unions expelled from the A.F. of L. In 1955, the two merged and became the AFL-CIO.
