Die Serenyi (released in the U.S. as "The Serenyi"), the 1918 Alfred Halm German silent marriage adultery melodrama (based on the novel by Otto Erich Hartleben) starring Lya Mara, Erich Kaiser-Titz, Conrad Veidt, Lupu Pick, and Leopold von Ledebur

Artist: Scheurich
Important Added Info: Note that this is a very rare "country of origin" poster (created for a specific theater that showed this movie; see below) from Germany from before World War II, which we have never auctioned before. There are very few German movie posters from before World War II in existence (because of the massive paper shortages in Germany during World War II), and most of those few are in museums.

Also note that the Tauentzien Palast (Tauentzien Palace) was a movie theater in Berlin that opened in 1913 (as Kammerlichtspiele). The building was designed by architect Emil Schaudt, and seating was available in orchestra and balcony levels. It was later taken over by the UFA chain and renamed Ufa-Lichtspiele, before being renamed again to Tauentzien Palast. The theater closed in 1930 and has since been demolished.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had darkened, typical of German posters of this period. It had tears and small paper loss scattered down the left border and some in parts of the other borders, including slightly in the letters in the left of the bottom border. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was mounted onto a thin linen with no excess, and no attempt at restoration. It either previously had two tears in the upper right of the image, or it acquired them after it was backed, and there is a small tear near he middle of the image. The poster absolutely should be taken off the old linen and properly backed, and since the majority of it is present, it will display well with little paint restoration, but bear all of the above in mind before bidding.
