An Original 1956 Vintage Theatrical Unfolded Forty by Sixty Movie Poster (40x60; measures 40" x 60" [102 x 152 cm]) (Learn More)

La Donna del Fiume (released in the U.S. in 1956 as "Woman of the River"), the 1954 Mario Soldati Italian/French crime melodrama ("Sophia Loren is all woman in Woman of the River") starring Sophia Loren ("The anAtomic Bomb from Italy"), Gerard Oury, Lise Bourdin, Rik Battaglia, Giorgio Bassani, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Florestano Vancini, Antonio Altoviti, and Mario Soldati. Note that this is one of the many early movies that Sophia Loren appeared in in the early 1950s. After it was released in 1954, she did not gain widespread international notice until the following year, and it was not until 1956 that this was released in the U.S., as "Woman of the River". After she became a superstar in 1957 with "Boy on a Dolphin", the movie was released again in the U.S. So there are both 1956 and 1957 U.S. posters from this movie, and it had an entirely different ad campaign each time!

If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned this poster once before, and it sold for $1,275 (and that poster was also in lesser condition as this one was, and was, in fact, clearly in lesser condition than this poster)! Note that this very sexy image of Sophia Loren was NOT used on the regular posters (including the one-sheet) when the movie was first released in the U.S. in 1956, but was solely used on this 40x60. When the movie was re-released a year later (see above), the new 1957 re-release one-sheet was based on this image, because the new ad campaign focused almost entirely on sexy Sophia Loren! But this is the only 1956 poster we are aware of with this great sexy image and tagline.

Condition: good. The poster has many creases, smudges, and scuffs scattered throughout, but they are much more in the background areas than they are in the image, although there are also ones in the image and letters (see our image). Someone must have been cutting something with a razor on top of this poster, because there is a 1 1/2" razor cut in the background below Loren's foot near the middle of the poster, and the poster is creased to the left and right of that from the front. That is because the razor cut was on the back of the poster, and it only went through to the front in the 1 1/2" described above, but it also "scored" the back of the poster for 10" to the right of the razor cut. There is a tiny tear above the razor cut that extends to the foot, but not into it. Obviously, all of the above can be corrected during restoration, and after restoration, this poster will display wonderfully, but bear in mind its condition before placing a bid on it.
