An Original Vintage Theatrical Autographed 8 1/4" x 10" [21 x 25 cm] Movie Still (Learn More)

Joanne Woodward was born in Thomasville, Georgia in 1930. She won beauty pageants as a teen, and then went to college and majored in drama, and then moved to New York where she got some parts on TV and Broadway. She was an understudy in the Broadway version of Picnic, and Paul Newman was also an understudy, and although he was married with children, a romance began. Although he had started in movies a year before she did, her career took off before his, with her winning the Best Actress Academy Award for The Three Faces of Eve in 1957. The following year Newman divorced his wife and married Woodward, and the next year she had the first of their three children together. She continued to work steadily throughout the years, in movies, on stage, and on TV, sometimes with her husband. Some of her most memorable performances were in Mr. & Mrs. Bridge (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), Rachel, Rachel (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), Summer Wishes Winter Dreams (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), and in The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds in 1972 (where her real-life daughter Nell Potts co-starred with her) and in both she was directed by her husband. Woodward and Newman lived in Westport, Connecticut for many years, and lived very private lives, and of course did wonderful charitable work. Somehow Woodward managed to have a show business career, a stable marriage and family life and be socially conscious and charitable, all at the same time! It is something few other celebrities have ever managed to achieve. As of 2021, she is still alive at the age of 91. She is currently suffering from Alzheimer's, and cared for by her daughters.
Important Added Info: Note that this still has been personally autographed (signed) by Joanne Woodward! Also note that this still appears in every way to be original U.S. release EXCEPT that there is one very tiny line of French type in the lower right. It reads, "IMPRIME AUX ETATS-UNIS D'AMERIQUE". A collector has told us that he believes this means the still was printed for use in areas that included French-speaking parts of Canada, but that it WAS printed in the U.S., and that makes complete sense to us (and we have seen this on stills from the 1940s through the early 2000s, so it has certainly been done for an extremely long time)! So it is an original still from , but it was printed partially for use in French-speaking Canada. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

Note that our consignor purchased a collection of autographed stills that were collected by Leonard Sorgi, who was a unit manager for ABC for shows like The Soupy Sales Show, The Jerry Mahony Show, and many others. He was also Unit Manager for the Academy Awards for a number of years, and during his long and varied career, he met many celebrities and obtained autographs from them in person (often personalized to him). Our consignor (and we) feel certain that the autograph on this still is authentic!

As is true of all the signed items we are currently auctioning, we give every buyer 30 days in which to review what they purchased and they can return any item as long as it is within 30 days of the end of the auction. On non-signed items, we give a "lifetime guarantee" on everything we auction, but on signed items, we give the above modified guarantee of 30 days after the auction closes.
