An Original Vintage Theatrical Unfolded German "A0" Movie Poster (33x47; measures 33 1/4" x 47 1/2" [84 x 121 cm]) (Learn More) Hexensabbat (literally translates to "Witches' Sabbath"), the 1936 German annual art festival featuring works by local artists. Note that this poster features art of a large devil by Roman Feldmeyer. Note that this series of carnivals (one was held annually in Munich) was a uniquely German phenomenon that began in the 1400s. It involved Pagan rituals and many of the early participants were strongly anti-Semitic, portraying Jews as Devil worshipers. The festivals continued over the centuries and when Adolf Hitler became the leader of Germany, he banned all expressionist and "modern" art as "decadent", but oddly, he allowed the Hexensabbat carnivals, and the posters created for them, to continue (perhaps this related to the years he lived in Munich as a young man, including when he was in prison near the city, when he wrote "Mein Kampf", and perhaps he did not have a philosophical difference with the Hexensabbat)! Artist: Roman Feldmeyer Important Added Info: Note that this is one of three posters from Hexensabbat events we were consigned (from 1933, 1936, and 1937). We are auctioning them in three different auctions. They are extremely rare. In all our years of auctioning, we had only previously auctioned one poster from one of these events, and that one was from 1939! Note that this poster is one of a remarkable collection of 46 pre-World War II German posters that we were consigned (and we are auctioning them in 46 separate auctions). They date from the 1880s to the late 1930s, but most are from the 1920s and 1930s. Posters from this time period are extremely scarce, due to the massive paper shortages in Germany during World War II. Many of these posters are for specific events that were held, and naturally, those posters would figure to be even more rare, since they could only have been used prior to the date of the event. This is a rare opportunity to purchase these extremely rare posters! Also note that this German A0 poster measures 33 1/4" x 47 1/2" [84 x 121 cm]. Condition: good to very good. The poster was never folded. It had an uneven 5" tear in the upper left border that extended into the dark background, with a diagonal crease above it. Someone had put tape on the back of parts of the upper left border and they bled through to the front (see our image). Someone put some tape on the back of the entire right border where there had been a few small tears, and that tape has bled through to the front. Learn More about condition grades
