Date Sold 5/13/2014Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Undated (possibly 1940s; from the first release of this movie in Argentina) Vintage Theatrical Folded Argentinean Movie Poster (measures 29 1/4" x 43" [74 x 109 cm]) (Learn More) The Triumph of Sherlock Holmes, the 1935 (released in the U.S. in 1939) Leslie S. Hiscott English crime mystery thriller ("Adapted from 'Valley of Fear' by the late Sir Arthur Conan Doyle") starring Arthur Wontner (as Sherlock Holmes), Lyn Harding, Leslie Perrins, Jane Carr, and Ian Fleming (NOT the creator of James Bond, but an Australian actor who appeared in 158 movies between 1926 and 1968; as Dr. Watson). Note that this was one of five movies in which Arthur Wontner played Sherlock Holmes. They were made between 1931 and 1937. The first four were made between 1931 and 1935 and were released in the U.S. soon after they were made. The fifth one, Murder at the Baskervilles, was released in England when it was made in 1937, but it was not released at that time in the U.S. However, after 20th Century-Fox and Universal Pictures had great success with their Sherlock Holmes movies starting in 1939, Murder at the Baskervilles was first released in the U.S. in 1941, by Astor Pictures (a company normally associated with re-releases, but in this case, it was the first release of this movie). NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this poster was originally mistakenly auctioned has "Murder at the Baskervilles" (because it has that title in English under the Spanish title), so we mistakenly sold it under that 1937 title multiple times. But a sharp-eyed person noted that the cast at lower left corresponds to the 1935 English movie "The Triumph of Sherlock Holmes" (and obviously, the title on the poster is the same as the English title, but in Spanish), so someone in Argentina got the title confused when they added the English language title. This also makes us strongly suspect that this is a 1940s release, possibly the first Argentinean release (and we know that it was not released in the U.S. until 1939). So this poster is from "The Triumph of Sherlock Holmes", and it is likely from the early 1940s. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Condition: good to very good. The poster was folded in half an extra time resulting in a vertical foldline at left and right. The poster has darkened slightly and there is some tattering along the foldlines and edges. Learn More about condition grades
