An Unfolded German Special Poster (measures 16 1/4" x 23 3/4" [41 x 60 cm]) (Learn More)

Burgerkriegs (literally translates to "Civil War"), the 1977 German poster announcing a protest gathering to take place on September 24th. Note that a demonstration by 50,000 people against a nuclear power station took place in in Kalkar, Germany in 1977. That year saw a number of large events around several other such sites in Germany, but this was by far the largest. Because of several high profile kidnappings and assassinations by the RAF terrorist group, crucial legislation was changed in an undeclared state of emergency, the police hugely stepped up surveillance, and its presence through road checks and identity controls. Concerns were expressed, especially by civil rights groups and the political left, about a growing police state and civil war type of situation arising in Germany. The term Germany in Autumn was later coined for 1977, as it was perceived to have been the biggest crisis year of Germany's post war period.
