An Original Vintage Campaign Book (measures 4 1/4" x 4 3/4" [11 x 12 cm]; 32 pages) (Learn More)

MGM 1930-31, the mini campaign book created in 1930 (MGM also created a regular size campaign book that year, called "Your Lucky Star"). This version measures 4 1/4" x 4 3/4" (the regular version had 102 pages and measured 11 1/4" x 15 1/4"). Note that MGM, like the other major studios, made elaborate campaign books in the 1920s. But after their 1930-1931 campaign book, they apparently did not make any until 1934, when they made a 1934-1935 large campaign book. At the same time, in 1930, they began to make "mini campaign books", which are small booklets that measure 4 1/4" x 4 3/4", but contain pages that look exactly like what would be in a large campaign book. So did they not make any large campaign books for three years? We doubt that, but we suspect that the reason those don't seem to exist is that, due to the Great Depression, they drastically cut back on spending money, and they probably only made the large campaign books for major theaters, and sent the smaller theaters these "mini campaign books". But the mini campaign books are themselves exceptionally rare, because almost none of them are known to exist from any year. THIS mini campaign book is from 1930-1931, and it is especially significant, because it has full-page ads for Lon Chaney and Greta Garbo announcing that they "TALK", and there are also ads for Buster Keaton ("The 'Surprise Star' of Talkies"), Laurel & Hardy ("Those Funny Fellows"), Our Gang, Cecil B. DeMille's Madam Satan, Marion Davies, Joan Crawford, William Haines, Norma Shearer, and much more! A collector who owns this shared a few notes about its contents: "Greta Garbo was announced to star in Red Dust, in the role eventually played by Jean Harlow two years later. The March of Time was halted mid-production and never completed, but musical numbers from the unfinished film turned up in several MGM features and short subjects, most notably Broadway to Hollywood from 1933. The Five O'Clock Girl had started production two years earlier but never finished. Rosalie was shelved until 1937 with Eleanor Powell in the title role meant for Davies. Great Day was stopped mid production and never finished. The Bugle Sounds was shelved until 1942 with Wallace Beery in the role meant for Chaney."

There is a large campaign book version for 1930-1931, but it does not have the same ads as this, although it advertise the same movies. So the same might be true for the next three years, but we just don't know. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned two examples of this small campaign book, and the last one sold for $332!

Condition: fine. This studio booklet is in wonderful condition, about as good as one could possibly hope! Over the years, I have auctioned a number of small booklets like this, and I have never seen one survive in better condition!
