Date Sold 6/13/2019Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Werewolf of London, the 1935 Stuart Walker England monster horror thriller ("Beware! Terror strikes in the night"; "Murder in the moonlight! Terror stalks! An unseen hand strikes!"; "Beware the wicked hour and the stalking being!"; "Beware the stalking being, half human, half beast!") starring Henry Hull (in the title role as the werewolf), Warner Oland (best remembered as Charlie Chan in the 20th Century Fox series), Valerie Hobson, Lester Matthews, Clark Williams, Spring Byington, Lawrence Grant, and J.M. Kerrigan. Note that this is the "forgotten" Universal horror movie of the 1930s, because Universal abandoned this portrayal of the werewolf, and created an entirely different wolf-man in 1941 with Lon Chaney Jr. in very different makeup from that which Henry Hull wore in this movie. But this was Universal's very first werewolf movie! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that first release 1935 movie paper from this classic first Universal werewolf movie is beyond scarce, and the posters from it sell for tens of thousands of dollars! We previously auctioned another example of this great card, which shows Henry Hull in full makeup as the werewolf (and note how different this werewolf makeup is from Lon Chaney's "wolf man" makeup from his 1940s Universal movies), and it sold for $2,005. We also auctioned a different scene that did not show Hull in werewolf makeup, and that sold for $1,509. Other than those two cards, we have never sold any other first release lobby cards! Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. Condition: good to very good. There is paper loss in the right of the bottom border that affects the tiny text and very slightly extends into the black border area. There are creases and a few faint scuffs and smudges around the edges. There is surface paper loss and a tape stain on the back of the upper right corner, where tape was roughly removed, but it has no effect on the front. I would think most collectors could happily display this wonderful card as it is, or certainly, expert restoration could be performed (and we can provide a wonderful scan of the missing text in the bottom border so that a restorer could match it perfectly).
