A Vintage German Book (measures 5 3/4" x 8 1/4" [15 x 21 cm]; 50 pages) (Learn More)

Wilhelm Tell (released in the U.S. as "The Legend of William Tell"), the 1934 H. Manning Haynes & Heinz Paul Swiss/German historical biography melodrama (based on the Friedrich Schiller play, about the Swiss woodsman who is forced to shoot an apple off of his own son's head!) starring Hans Marr (in the title role as William Tell), Conrad Veidt (as Gessler), Emmy Goring (billed as "Emmy Sonnemann"), Eugene Klopfer, Olaf Bach, and Maly Delschaft. Note that Emmy Sonnemann played William Tell's wife. The year after this movie was made, she married Hermann Goring (yes, THAT Hermann Goring, and Adolf Hitler was the best man at their wedding!). This is one of the movies that was made in more than one version, with different languages. This German version is called "Wilhelm Tell" and stars Hans Marr and Conrad Veidt, and the English language version, released in England, was called "They'll Never Surrender", and that starred the same actors. Also note that this movie was one of the last movies Conrad Veidt made before he fled Germany in 1934. He had starred in The Wandering Jew and Jew Suss in England, and we suspect that he preferred England to Germany. Movie paper of any kind from any of these movies is beyond rare!

Important Added Info: Note that ANY movie paper from this movie is incredibly rare. We have never auctioned even a single item from this movie until we received this German book! There is an oddity to this book. The interior first page looks like the cover of a German program, but the rest of it is clearly an illustrated picture book from the movie. Perhaps they reused the cover from the German program. Also note that we have pictured the front cover, the title page, and the interior page that shows the publishing information, and one or more interior 2-page spreads.

Condition: good to very good. There are light brown stains on both covers, but the interior pages are in pretty good condition.
