An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked French Movie Poster (measures 23 1/4" x 32"; known as an 'affiche' poster in France) (Learn More) Veronica Lake was an actress from the 1930s to the 1970s. She is best remembered from the 1940s as the sexy girl in many film noirs. Some of her movies include: Sullivan's Travels, This Gun For Hire, So Proudly We Hail!, The Glass Key, Hold Back the Dawn, The Blue Dahlia, I Married a Witch, and Star Spangled Rhythm. Note that many people remember the story of her cutting her hair, but it is quite likely that they remember it "wrong". What was the story? It was that she cut her hair because women were working in factories, and the government did not want women to get their hair caught in machines, so they asked Miss Lake to be a role model and "cut hers first". While it is true that Veronica Lake was a gigantic star in 1942, and it is true that she cut her hair at that time, the above is not the correct story, but one of those "urban legends"! We auctioned a great still of her where it explained that she offered to cut her famous long hair as an inducement to get people to buy war bonds. After $180,000 was raised, she cut 1 inch of her hair, and she said that "for $5,000,000, she'll cut the whole thing off"! Of course, that money was raised, and she DID cut her hair, and sadly discovered that her wonderful hair was a major part of her appeal, and her stardom quickly diminished. Lake passed away in 1973 at the age of 50 from hepatitis. Artist: Roger Soubie Important Added Info: Note that this French poster measures 23 1/4" x 32" and is linenbacked. Condition: very good. This poster was linenbacked, and one of the following is true: either the poster had minor defects, and was well backed, OR it had more significant defects, but they were extremely well restored, OR it had some very minor defects that were not completely restored, and are slightly noticeable. You can tell which of the above is the case for this particular poster by reading our "Pre-Restoration Defects & Quality of Restoration" description and also by looking at our "super-sized" image of the actual poster (we are the only major auction company we know of that gives accurate detailed pre-restoration information about linenbacked posters to our bidders, but we wish everyone did!). The poster had a fine line of separation down the top half of the vertical foldline and across the left half of the horizontal foldline. There was a long, slightly diagonal crease running from Lake's eyebrow across to the right border. There was a fairly significant, slightly semi-circular area of paper loss in the bottom of the center of the poster approximately 5" wide at the bottom and tapering to tiny paper loss approximately 2" below Lake's name. There were some creases, tears, and tiny areas of paper loss in the other borders. There were some creases and smudges in the center of the poster in Lake's chin. There is some darkening on both foldlines, but it is most noticeable in the white area at the bottom of the vertical foldline. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. While it was linenbacked fairly well, and would display well, the defects are still more noticeable than I personally would like on such a beautiful poster. If I owned this poster, I would surely have an expert professional re-back it, and after proper restoration, the poster would look fantastic, and it would only have restoration along the two foldlines, at the crossfold, and in the missing paper area at the bottom of the center of the poster (which is solely white paper).
