Date Sold 4/9/2009Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked French One-Panel "Grande" Movie Poster (1p; measures approximately 45" x 61") (Learn More) Vor Faelles Ven (released in the U.S. as "Our Mutual Friend"), the 1921 Anders W. Sandberg Danish silent murder mystery melodrama (based on the book 'Our Mutual Friend' by Charles Dickens, which was his last completed novel; the story is perhaps the darkest of all of Dickens' works; the book opens with a man going through the Thames River late at night looking for drowned men, so he can steal their possessions before turning their bodies over to the police; he finds the body of a soon-to-be-wealthy man, who was murdered before he could collect his inheritance, and his fortune goes to a young female heiress, and there is much intrigue, with many characters appearing, some of whom are after the inheritance for themselves) starring Peter Malberg, Aage Fonss, Kate Riise, Peter Fjelstrup, Karen Sandberg Caspersen, Svend Kornbeck, and Kate Riise. Note that this was one of four Charles Dickens adaptations made by Wid Gunning between 1921 and 1925 in Denmark for release in Scandinavian countries. If the unusual first name "Wid" seems familiar, it is because Mr. Gunning started the most famous trade magazine in early Hollywood, "Wid's Daily"! Also note that the opening of the movie is similar to that of "Sunset Blvd.", where the movie opens with a drowned central character! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that the French poster artist depicted the opening scene of the book, where the men find a dead body in the river, and the art is very dark, and captures the feeling of the novel quite well! Condition: good. The poster had small paper loss at some crossfolds and some creases, tears, and tiny paper loss on parts of some foldlines. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. Unfortunately, this poster was backed onto an extremely thin linen, and at some point after linenbacking, the poster was roughly handled and there are now creases around the edges of the poster (in both the thin linen and the poster itself), and there are creases scattered within the image. There are tears and the poster is lifting from the linen in the center of the top border. If I owned this cool historic poster (which seems to me is a true museum piece!), I would certainly immediately have it removed from the thin linen, and after proper linenbacking and restoration, the poster will look wonderful, and will likely require little paint restoration within the image area.
