An Original Vintage Unfolded Stage Play Poster (measures 21" x 28" [53 x 71 cm]) (Learn More)

The Prisoner of Zenda, the 1895 stage play production ("Magnificent scenic production"; "Now for the king!"; "Flavia greets you"; "Where is He?"; "I know your secret"; "By special arrangement with Mr. Daniel Frohman"; "Dramatized from Anthony Hope's fascinating romance"; about a king who is about to have his coronation, and his evil brother has him drugged and kidnapped so that he can become king instead, but the future king's friends find an exact lookalike who takes his place, and he becomes the new king, and even wins the love of the real king's girlfriend, but he ultimately gives it all up when he gets a chance to rescue the real king). Note that this book was a massive success after it was written by Anthony Hope in 1894. The following year, Daniel Frohman, a major producer of plays, hired noted actor James K. Hackett to play both lead roles. It was another huge success. In 1913, when Frohman was forming Famous Players Film Company with Adolph Zukor, he thought to have their very first film be The Prisoner of Zenda, and he was able to lure James K. Hackett out of retirement to recreate his great success on film. The movie was very successful and helped Famous Players become very successful and led to the establishment of Paramount Pictures the following year!
If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that this is one of a remarkable group of around 100 guaranteed authentic mostly war posters (around 75 war posters, plus 25 others, including political ones) mostly dating from before 1900 through 1945, with 15 from after that date! These were originally acquired by an archive decades ago, and they have been in storage ever since, until they were recently consigned to us. Many of these are the sorts of posters that you can find reproductions of on the Internet, but finding guaranteed originals like these is incredibly difficult (years can go by before these are offered for sale or at auction). This is a very rare opportunity to purchase any of these more than 100 posters!

Condition: good. The poster was never folded. It has tears in the middle left, in the center of the man's coat. It has small tears and a crease in the lower left background area. It has some tears and creases around the edges. Someone put paper tape on the back of all four borders. Any talented restorer could remove the tape from the back of the poster and linenback it, but bear this in mind before placing a bid on this poster.
