An Original Vintage German Hardcover Campaign Book (measures 9" x 12" [23 x 30 cm]; 186 pages) (Learn More)

UFA 1927, the 1927 special deluxe German hardcover campaign book that was put out to promote upcoming Parufamet movies. This was a year after Paramount Pictures and MGM bailed out UFA, which had overextended itself and was on the verge of bankruptcy, and in return, the company was renamed "Parufamet", and it had to distribute 20 films from each American studio in Germany each year. Apparently, the studio was making a comeback, and even though they issued a separate Parufamet studio yearbook for both 1926/27 and 1927/28, they ALSO produced this wonderful special hardcover that more thoroughly showcased upcoming UFA films, of course focusing most strongly on Metropolis, for which they devoted three pages, but also covering the upcoming Paramount and MGM movies (although those are covered in the back of the book). The book is like the greatest American studio yearbooks of the 1920s. Each movie gets multiple pages with great artwork images and there are also sixteen special deluxe heavy stock pages with textured gold borders that have tipped-in photos of Parufamet's best stars on one side and are blank on the other. The sixteen Parufamet stars pictured are: Lil Dagover, Xenia Desni, Emil Jannings, Lya de Putti, Mae Murray, Conrad Veidt, Ossi Oswalda, Willy Fritsch, Brigitte Helm, Rudolf Klein-Rogge, Lilian Hall-Davis, Ellen Richter, Liane Haid, Maria Corda. There are also two more deluxe gold pages of great American actresses Pola Negri, and Gloria Swanson (both of these are blank on the back as well). This truly is as nice a campaign book as I have ever seen, not only because of the amazing movies covered ("Metropolis" by Fritz Lang, "Tartuffe" by F.W. Murnau, "Variety" by E.A. Dupont, "Faust" by Murnau, and so many other UFA German movies of the time), plus great art ads for American movies with Harold Lloyd, Buster Keaton (in both "The Navigator" and "Seven Chances"), Lon Chaney Sr., Gloria Swanson (in "Madame Sans Gene"), and many others. Surprisingly, there is also a section on nine Warner Bros. movies and eight First National movies, which apparently means Parufamet made a deal to distribute those as well, and they include an incredible 2-page ad for "The Lost World". There is even a full-page ad near the end for Felix the Cat cartoons! Finally, there is a great fold-out poster which measures 16 1/4" x 22 1/4" that is bound into the last page, which shows UFA's great directors, with, of course, Fritz Lang at the center, surrounded by F.W. Murnau, Alexander Korda, E.A. Dupont, and others (see our image). To top it all off, there is a wonderful special binding which has two spines on the left and right and the front cover is split into two one-third size pieces on the left and right, with a fancy clips at the top and bottom that hold them together (see our image)! I can't imagine how much money was spent on creating this book, but it is surely more than any campaign book I have ever seen! So not only does it have the best production values, the best art, and the best movies, but it also has movies from four incredible studios, something not true in any other campaign book!

Important Added Info: Note that we once previously auctioned another example of this book in 2016, and it sold for $639. Because that was the first time we had ever auctioned this book, we said that we weren't certain that it was complete, and it also had sixteen tipped-in photos, and we said we weren't sure that there weren't originally more photos. However, now, we have been consigned a second example of this wonderful book, and it is virtually identical to the other one, except that the other one had a different color on the cover, and it had ribbon ties attached to the front that are not on this example. But what is really important is that this second example has the exact same number of pages as the earlier one, and it has the exact same number of tipped-in photos, so now we ARE certain it is complete in both ways!

Note: We have 30 images of the campaign books in this set, but due to a space limitation, only TEN of the 30 images are displayed above. However, there is a "supersize" link to the right of those images that lets you see the other 20.

Condition: good to very good. The portrait pages described above (on a heavy paper stock with textured gold) were bound into the book in a special way. It appears that one of them came loose because it was separated, and the owner of the book re-attached it with archival tape at the spine. The poster that was originally attached to the last interior page (see above) has come loose. There is wear at the spine of the hardcover bindings, and the original ribbon ties that held the two cover flaps together are no longer present. There is scuffing and some surface paper loss on the covers. Other than these defects, the book is in generally really nice condition, as you can tell from our many images. It is in similar condition to the other example of this book that we auctioned three years ago.
