A Vintage Hardcover Book (measures 5" x 7 1/2" [13 x 19 cm]; 319 pages) (Learn More)

The Bat, the 1926 Roland West silent crime horror mystery melodrama ("A comedy mystery drama by Mary Roberts Rinehart and Avery Hopwood"; "From the stage play produced by Wagenhals and Kemper"; about a group of people who are guests of a mystery writer at a spooky old house, and a master criminal dresses up as a giant bat and terrorizes everyone!; to make the movie more "spooky", almost all the scenes were shot at night) starring Jack Pickford, Louise Fazenda, Eddie Gribbon, George Beranger, and Charles Herzinger. Note that the director virtually remade the movie in a sound version four years later as "The Bat Whispers".

Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this hardcover book!

Note that this is the George H. Doran Company first edition but it has a Grosset & Dunlap dust jacket. Here are some more details about this book: Grosset & Dunlap was a publisher that made a deal to publish "movie edition" hardcover novels, and in this case, Grosset & Dunlap purchased remainder George H. Doran first edition books and added a new dust jacket. This is why, unlike most "movie editions", there are no images from the movie within the book, only on the cover of the dust jacket. These books were incredibly popular in the 1920s and 1930s. Note that we have pictured the front cover, the title page, and the interior page that shows the publishing information, and one or more interior 2-page spreads. Because we know that the dust jacket is an important part of the value of this book, we also pictured the entire dust jacket opened up. Between that image and our other images, you should be able to get a good sense of the overall condition of this book.

Note that this is one of an amazing collection of 30 movie edition books (and a few closely related items) that were consigned to us from a man who has collected such books for over half a century! Included are some of the most rare and desirable of these books, and all have the original dust jackets (many times such books lost their dust jackets over the years and they are far more rare with the dust jacket). This is a very rare opportunity to obtain one or more of these books, most of which we have either never auctioned before or only auctioned once before!

Condition: very good. The dust jacket has tiny tears in parts of the edges. The book itself is in pretty nice condition (see our many images).
