There are similar Canadian posters for other top RKO titles of the 1930s, and some people have sold them as being from the first release year of each movie (we know of one case where a Canadian poster was altered to make it look exactly like the U.S. poster, which is very sad). However, we think it is far more likely that these Canadian posters all date from the very early 1940s. Why? Because they are a different size from the first release U.S. posters and they are not of the same printing quality of the first release U.S. posters (although they are quite nice), and since I know that Canadian theaters used U.S. posters in the 1930s, I think it is extremely likely that it is NOT from the first release year. We think it is far more likely that when World War II caused the major Hollywood studios to lose distribution in Europe, and also caused them to lose most of their top stars to the war, they likely made a deal with Canadian distributors to re-release their classic movies in Canada at some point during those war years. This is further reinforced by the fact that other Canadian posters like this have surfaced over the years, and they are usually from classic RKO movies from throughout the 1930s, and they are often found together, but printed on very similar paper, making it far more likely they were printed at the same time. But we don't have any absolute evidence to prove this, but we would be VERY surprised if someone could prove that this poster was from the first release year. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had two evenly spaced vertical foldline and the normal three horizontal folds, with minor wear on the foldlines. It had a 4" tear in the top right corner in the blank paper only, and paper loss in the bottom right corner that extended into the corner of the image, affecting the last number in that area. It had some pinholes around the edges and some writing in the left of the top blank border. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well! Learn More about condition grades
