Marquand"; "Original story by Willis Cooper and Norman Foster"; the fourth entry in this series of popular movies) starring Peter Lorre (in the title role as Mr. Moto), Rochelle Hudson, Robert Kent, J. Edward Bromberg, Chick Chandler, and George Regas. Note that Fox had had great success with its Chinese detective, Charlie Chan, so it seemed natural for them to start this second series featuring a Japanese detective. It did not start until 1937, perhaps because they did not have an actor suitable for the lead role, but Peter Lorre had substance abuse issues, and he was probably happy to get the work. Fox made seven movies in just three years, but then they stopped the series, likely because of the rise of anti-Japanese sentiment in the U.S., as World War II neared.
