An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) The Day the Earth Stood Still, the classic 1951 Robert Wise science fiction (sci-fi) alien-contact thriller ("From out of space.... a warning and an ultimatum!"; "Strange power from another planet menaces the Earth!"; from the story by Harry Bates; about a super intelligent alien visiting the Earth, and mankind mistrusts him without reason; he is able to "pass" as a human, and he visits the world's greatest scientist, and when he is injured and taken to a hospital, he is rescued by his robot Gort) starring Michael Rennie (as Klaatu), Patricia Neal, Hugh Marlowe, Sam Jaffe, Billy Gray, Frances Bavier, and Lock Martin (as Gort the Robot). Note that the unusual music heard in this movie was achieved through the use of the musical instrument called a theramin, and audiences loved the eerie sounds it made, and it became standard in many science fiction movies thereafter to use this instrument in the same way! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is a very desirable and rare poster! We have only auctioned four examples of it over all our years of auctioning, and two of those examples were in much lesser condition, and one was linenbacked, and only one was unbacked and in "very good" condition! Also note that this poster has been graded and authenticated by mpgrading.com. This means that a separate 8 1/2" x 11" paper comes with the poster, and that it has been "encrypted with a unique 9-digit serial number with invisible DNA-laced ink" which has been hidden somewhere in an unobtrusive portion of the poster. On the certificate, the poster has been given a grade of "fine (7)", but of course, that grading scale is not the same as ours (see below). Note that this poster has never been backed. It was folded at one time, but it has been stored rolled, and the folds have diminished greatly over time. But while it could be sent rolled in a tube, we would much prefer to send it in a large flat package, to lessen the chance of damage. But we will send it rolled in a tube if the new owner insists. Condition: very good. The poster was folded once in each direction and there were some creases in the middle of the poster, surely caused when it was folded. The poster had a 5" tear in the left border that ran through the center of the word "DAY", ending in the middle of the "Y", and someone put brown paper tape on the back of that area. There is tiny surface paper loss in the background to the left of the word, but it might be just because it was taped incorrectly (and it is certainly not distracting). There is a 1" tear in the left of the top blank border and a 1 1/4" tear near the middle of the top border that slightly extends into the solid background. There is a tiny tear in the lower left border. There are some creases around the edges of the poster. Other than the defects described above, the poster is in really nice condition! While I would think almost every collector could absolutely enjoy displaying this wonderful half-sheet on their wall as it is, it can of course have slight restoration performed to the above minor defects, if the new owner desires.
