An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Other Company One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41") (Learn More) Raffles, the 1939 Sam Wood romantic crime jewel thief comedy ("I'd love to dine with you, darling... But these handcuffs are so awkward!"; "There's romance in every robbery!"; "He stole my watch! He stole my pearls! He stole my Heart!"; "That dapper amateur thief is back to baffle the Police of London!"; "Fascinating gentleman jewel thief of fiction is back to baffle the police of London!"; "The severest test that ever faced a girl in love. She answered it with her heart - would you?"; "Should she protect society's most sensational thief?"; "A comedy-romance with "the Goldwyn touch"... in the finest tradition of screen entertainment!"; "Based upon the celebrated adventures of 'The Amateur Cracksman' by E.W. Hornung") starring David Niven (in the title role as A.J. Raffles), Olivia de Havilland, Dame May Whitty, Dudley Digges, and Douglas Walton. Note that Raffles was a master criminal and jewel thief in a series of 26 short stories and one novel written between 1898 and 1909. The first movie adaptation was in 1905, and it was followed by others in 1917 (with John Barrymore in the lead role), in 1925, and the first sound version was in 1930 with Ronald Colman, and finally, in 1939 with David Niven. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this was printed by the "other company". This was a company in the Midwest that from roughly 1936 to roughly 1941 printed its own one-sheets and lobby card sets (and a very few inserts and half-sheets) for three major studio movies (Warner Brothers, Paramount and United Artists, but no other studios). The posters and lobby cards are from the original release of the movie, and almost always have completely different artwork from the regular studio release. They never have the name of the releasing studio on the poster or any of the lobby cards. Sometimes, "other company" posters or lobby cards have images that are the equal of those from the regular studio release posters or lobby cards! Condition: good. This poster has been linenbacked, but it was not very well done, either because the restorer did not do a very good job, or because the years since it has been linenbacked have not been kind to the poster. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. Generally, it had tears and areas of paper loss in the top foldline and some in the other folds, and paper loss at the crossfolds. There were tears and areas of paper loss around the edges of the poster. The poster was not that well backed, because you can see signs of the above general defects and the restoration of the defects (in some cases, as should be immediately evident in our image, the linenbacker did no restoration to some of the defects). I would think few collectors would want to display it as it is, without someone performing some additional restoration. Certainly, a talented restorer could perform additional restoration (either with or without re-backing the poster), but it might be fairly expensive to have this done, so bear that in mind before you place a bid.
