An Original 1947 (from the first release of this movie in Belgium) Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Belgian Movie Poster (measures 10 3/4" x 15" [27 x 38 cm]) (Learn More) Casablanca, the classic 1942 Michael Curtiz (winner of the Best Director Academy Award for this film) anti-Nazi World War II (WWII) romantic love triangle melodrama ("From a play by Murray Burnett and June Alison"; winner of the Best Picture Academy Award; it is interesting to note that the movie was made while World War II was being fought, and at a point when it seemed very real that Germany might take over the entire world, and in that context, the strong emotions expressed throughout the movie are all the more poignant, given what was going on in the world at that time) starring Humphrey Bogart (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; as "Rick", Richard Blaine), Ingrid Bergman (as Ilsa Lund), Paul Henreid (as Victor Laszlo), Claude Rains (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film; as Captain Renault), Conrad Veidt (as Major Strasser), Sydney Greenstreet (as Signor Ferrari), Peter Lorre (as Ugarte), S.Z. Sakall (as Carl), Dooley Wilson (as Sam), Madeleine LeBeau (as Yvonne), Leonid Kinskey (as Sascha), John Qualen (as Berger), Marcel Dalio (as Emil, the croupier at the roulette wheel), Corinna Mura (as the cabaret singer who plays the guitar and sings "La Marseillaise"), Helmut Dantine (as the young man playing roulette), and Joy Page (as Dantine's girlfriend, who is willing to sleep with Rains) NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this classic anti-Nazi movie could of course not play in Belgium in 1942 when it was first released. We do not know exactly when it was released in Belgium, but it was released in France in 1947, and it seems likely that it was released in Belgium at the same time or very soon after. But is this poster from that first release (likely in 1947)? This has been a mystery in the hobby for many years! There are examples of this poster that were printed on the backs of maps, and some people have said that all examples of this poster were printed on the back of maps, but other people say that they were also printed with blank backs. However, it is also possible that the movie was re-released in Belgium in the early 1950s (perhaps 1953, because one of these posters without a mapback has a 1953 tax stamp on it), and that they printed the posters from the exact same plates, which would account for the smaller size, even though it might have been printed in 1953, when the posters were no longer that smaller size. It is also of course possible that the poster with the 1953 tax stamp was simply a left-over 1947 poster that was reused in 1953. We have talked to the leading Belgian experts, and no one has any clear answer to this question! The poster offered here is NOT printed on the back of a map, but it is the small size Belgian that we have only seen on Belgian posters from during and right after World War II. But because of the above uncertainty as to exactly when this poster is from, and whether it is from the first release, please do not bid on this poster unless you can accept this uncertainty. Finally, note that this poster is printed in a very small size (we have seen an example that measured 11" x 17", and another that measured 10 3/4" x 15 1/4" [27 x 39 cm]), and this example is 10 3/4" x 15", so they might have all been printed 11" x 17", and some were slightly trimmed, or they could have been printed in more than one size, so there is that uncertainty as well. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good to fine. The poster has less of a blank top area than a previous example we auctioned, which might mean that part of the blank top of this example was trimmed off (see above). It was folded across the middle and has very minor fold and border wear. Overall, the poster was in very good to fine condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well!
