eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result 3j0291 TARZAN THE APE MAN TC 1932 art of Johnny Weissmuller & Maureen O'Sullivan, very rare! Date Sold 12/20/2022Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. A Paperbacked Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC TC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Tarzan, the Ape Man, the 1932 W.S. Van Dyke jungle adventure action melodrama ("The thrill of thrills!"; "The producers of 'Trader Horn' have again brought out of the African jungle another great romantic thriller!"; "Based upon the Characters created by Edgar Rice Burroughs") starring Johnny Weissmuller (in the title role as Tarzan), Neil Hamilton, Maureen O'Sullivan (as Jane), C. Aubrey Smith, Doris Lloyd, Ray Corrigan, Jack Leonard (both as uncredited apes!) and Cheetah (played by an uncredited chimpanzee). Note that Crash Corrigan and Jack Leonard both made a REALLY wise investment in the 1930s, when they acquired "gorilla suits". In many of the movies in the 1930s and 1940s where there is a fake gorilla, it is played by either Crash Corrigan or Jack Leonard, no doubt because they could supply the suits! Of course, this was one of the most successful "franchises" in movie history, with several sequels with Weissmuller and O'Sullivan, and then more movies with just Weissmuller alone (after O'Sullivan left the franchise), and then other actors took up the lead role many different times! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned two examples of this first release title card! One of those auctioned for $5,808. The other one was in much lesser condition and it has since had additional restoration performed, and we are now re-auctioning that card, so it is still one of only two examples of this card we have ever auctioned. Note that this lobby card has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the lobby card was backed onto a heavy paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original lobby card (except somewhat heavier). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards, and lobby cards. Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. Prior to paperbacking, the card's borders were trimmed off, and it also had some pinholes, tears, and small paper loss around the edges, with some smudges, creases, and scuffs scattered in the image. Overall, the card was in fair to good condition prior to paperbacking. A REALLY talented restorer replaced the missing borders during the paperbacking process and performed really excellent restoration to all of the card's defects. It displays really well, although you can see slight signs of the restoration. But given the restoration it had, it was done really well, and I would think most collectors would not realize the extent of the restoration, even looking at it close up, and it will display well on the new owner's wall!
