An Original Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Movie Still. Also included is a resume that measures 8 1/2" x 14". (Learn More) Godfrey Cambridge was a black African American actor/comedian from the 1950s to the 1970s. He started with some minor roles in movies like The Last Angry Man, and then got a big break performing stand-up comedy on TV shows, and then won a Tony Award in 1962 in "Purlie Victorious". He appeared in many movies, but is probably best remembered for "Watermelon Man", where he is a white bigot who wakes up to discover that he has become a black man! Cambridge was scheduled to play the lead of Idi Amin in "Victory at Entebbe" in 1976, but sadly, he had a heart attack and passed away. He was only 43. Important Added Info: Note that this publicity still was one that Mr. Cambridge submitted to casting directors in 1959 when he was just starting out. It appears to have many credits where he only played bit parts or was an extra, because they are not in his official resume! Note that he could do many accents including French, Italian, West Indian, Irish, British, Southern, and Jive, and that his "professional laugh" ranged "from a giggle to a guffaw", and that he could play age ranges from 19 to 40! Note that this still measures 8" x 10" and the resume measures 8 1/2" x 14" [22 x 36 cm]. Also note that this item comes from the estate of Paul Kohner, who had a remarkable life! Kohner was born in Czechoslovakia in 1902, and he was a journalist working at his father's newspaper. He came to Hollywood after interviewing Carl Laemmle, who gave him a job as a publicity man. He became the head of Universal's European department in Berlin, and returned to the U.S. in the early 1930s, and left Universal in 1938, becoming a publicity agent. Among his clients were some of the greatest film stars ever, including Greta Garbo, Ingrid Bergman, and also great directors such as John Huston and Billy Wilder. He had close personal friendships with many of his clients, and he saved every bit of correspondence and paper work from his agency! He was married to actress Lupita Tovar from 1932 until his death in 1988. Amazingly, after his death, few institutions showed interest in his immense files, and only a small amount ended up being saved, with a lot literally thrown away! Our consignor purchased the item offered here from Mr. Kohner's estate in 1989, and he has held it until now, when he has consigned several items from Mr. Kohner's estate to eMoviePoster.com, and each item is being auctioned separately.. Condition: very good to fine. Both the still and the resume are in nice condition! Learn More about condition grades
