An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Paperbacked Pressbook Cover (pressbook cover only; measures 16.5" x 18.5"; 1 page) (Learn More) The Wizard of Oz, the classic 1939 Victor Fleming family magical fantasy adventure musical ("MGM's miracle musical show of shows!"; "It's Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's Technicolor triumph!"; "Magnificent in its brilliant Technicolor splendor!"; "At Last It's Here Biggest Sensation Since "Snow White"!"; "The mighty miracle show that is the talk of America!"; "Amazing sights to see! The Tornado, Munchkinland, Horse of a Different Color, Startling Balloon Ascent, The Flying Monkeys, The Tree That Throws Apples"; "Gaiety! Glory! Glamour!"; based on the classic book of the same name by L. Frank Baum; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award) starring Judy Garland (as Dorothy), Frank Morgan (in the title role as The Wizard of Oz!), Ray Bolger (as The Scarecrow), Bert Lahr (as The Cowardly Lion), Jack Haley (as The Tin Man), Billie Burke (as Glinda, the Good Witch), Margaret Hamilton (as the Wicked Witch), Charley Grapewin, "The Munchkins", and Toto too! Note that MGM was worried about how well this movie would do at the box office, and they did something we don't remember seeing on any other major movie advertising! One of the taglines says "Biggest sensation since Snow White", which means MGM was advertising a Walt Disney movie, but that shows just how worried they were! Of course, they needn't have worried, because this was a timeless classic that has only improved with age. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this auction is for ONLY the front cover of the pressbook, which has been paperbacked. Please do not bid thinking it is for the entire pressbook! As many people are aware, because MGM was the number one studio in the late 1930s, they often created very bland posters for many of their movies, even their best ones, and this is true of THIS movie! This pressbook cover is one of the best images created by MGM, likely because this is what "sold" the movie to theater-owners, while posters were aimed at people who went to the theaters. This cover will look great on the new owners wall, and it is very difficult to obtain (we have only previously sold a few pressbooks from this movie, and they sell in the high thousands each). The posters from this movie sell for far more than that and they don't have as nice an image.
UPDATED 10/11/2022: Note that we received a pre-restoration photo and have updated the Condition Description to be more detailed. Condition: good. Only the front cover of the pressbook is present. Prior to being paperbacked, it had been folded once in each direction and had a small tear at middle-left that ran into the top-left of the W of "WIZARD". It had small tears and creases in the upper left that extended into the left of Garland's hair. There were some creases, smudges, and scuffs scattered throughout. A talented restorer backed this pressbook cover onto a heavy paper backing. Because they did not want it to have a "restored" look, only minimal restoration was performed, and I agree with that decision! While you can see the defects close up, the cover looks very good from a reasonable viewing distance, and it will display really well on the new owners wall! Learn More about condition grades
