An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Australian Daybill Movie Poster (db; measures 15" x 40" [38 x 102 cm]) (Learn More)

Cheating Cheaters, the 1927 Edward Laemmle silent romantic crime comedy ("Max Marcin's Stage Success"'; a clever comedy about two families of crooks who pose as wealthy people and move next door to wealthy families, intending to rob them; but then by chance they move in next to each other, and both try to rob the other family!) starring Kenneth Harlan, Betty Compson, Eddie Gribbon, Cesare Gravina, Lucien Litlefield, E.J. Ratcliffe, Sylvia Ashton, Erwin Connelly, and Maude Turner Gordon. Note that director Edward Laemmle has been largely forgotten by film history, but he has a VERY interesting biography! He is the nephew of Carl Laemmle, who persuaded him to leave his electrical engineering career in 1915 and join him at his recently opened Universal Studios. He started as an assistant director, mainly under John Ford. In 1917, he went to New Guinea to produce a movie about the natives there, and was shipwrecked, and spent two years among the Kia Kia cannibals! This adventure was re-created in the movie "Shipwrecked Among Cannibals", which became the first million dollar movie for Universal Studios. Edward Laemmle went on to direct roughly 50 movies, and had many famous assistants, including William Wyler. Note that this is a "lost" film, which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist.

Artist: Fred Brodrick
Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare poster. We have only auctioned one in all our years of auctioning and that was 13 years ago (and now that very same poster has been reconsigned to us for this auction, so it is still the only example we have ever auctioned!). Also note that this poster has a great stamp very rarely seen on any Australian posters! It reads "APPROVED BY THE CENSOR SUBJECT TO THE CONDITION THAT CHILDREN OVER SIX YEARS AND UNDER SIXTEEN YEARS SHALL NOT BE ADMITTED"! Note also that this poster was folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube.

Condition: good. The poster has some creases and tears around the edges. It has many light stains scattered throughout, and some appear to be printing defects and some are clearly stains added after printing. Obviously this incredibly rare poster can be restored, but please bear its defects in mind before bidding.
