An Original Vintage Linenbacked World War I United States Army Military Recruiting Poster (measures 30" x 40 1/2") (Learn More) I Want You For U.S. Army, the 1917 U.S. World War I (WWI) recruitment poster ("Nearest Recruiting Station") encouraging men to join the United States Army and featuring classic artwork of Uncle Sam pointing at the viewer by James Montgomery Flagg. Note that this is the original 1917 poster (surely this is one of the most reproduced poster images there is, and also it is likely the single most recognizable poster image ever created!). Note that the U.S. Army re-used this image in subsequent wars, but they slightly changed the background color of the poster and the size. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: James Montgomery Flagg Condition: very good to fine. The poster was never folded. There were three pieces of tape on the back of the top border (one solely in the top blank border, one extending into the red border area, and one extending through the red and blue borders, and into the edge of the white background below). There were three small tears in the lower left border, one that was 1 1/2", and extended through the red border into the white border next to it. There was a 4" tear in the lower right border extending into the background to the right of the "Y" of "ARMY", but ending 1" before it. There was a 1/2" x 2" rectangular area of paper loss in the upper right border, entering the red background area. There was a 1" tear in the right of the top border. There were five pairs of staple holes in the white background area above Uncle Sam's hat with one pair slightly entering the top of the hat. There were some faint smudges in the white background areas. Other than the above basically minor defects (almost all of which are in the borders), the poster was in quite nice condition prior to linenbacking (and it had never been folded). The poster was nicely backed, but the restorer did very minimal restoration to the above defects, likely wanting to put as little an amount of paint on the poster as possible! The restorer linenbacked the poster the way I like to see rare historic posters backed, meaning that they did very slight restoration to the defects described above, and I prefer that, because they are really not very distracting from any reasonable viewing distance (for me personally, they make it clear that the poster is a genuine 1917 original, and not any sort of repro, and I personally don't mind the signs of age on the poster at all, because it still displays wonderfully, since the artwork and title area are basically unaffected). But anyone who did feel the above defects were at all distracting could certainly have the poster professionally re-backed, and after proper restoration, it will look fantastic, and there would be next-to-no restoration at all in the image or title area!
