An Original Vintage Folded Dutch World War II Poster (measures 31 1/2" x 43 1/4" [80 x 110 cm]) (Learn More) Waarschuwing (literally translates to "Warning"), the 1940s Dutch World War II (WWII) poster (created by the Nazi German occupying forces; featuring taglines that roughly translates to "Warning. English and American aircraft have thrown out fountain pen and pencils at various locations. These pencils and fountain pens contain an amount of explosive substance. Picking it up is life-threatening. Just like the girl in the image who was injured by such a device shows, children are in danger because of their inexperience. In the interest of the Dutch population, everyone is obliged to inform the nearest police post when they find such devices, and experts will dispose of them") telling the Dutch people about alleged Allied pen bombs, and featuring an image of the devices and a maimed child. The poster was inspired by reports (perhaps an urban legend) that U.S. planes were dropping hundreds of explosive fountain pens (pens that exploded when their tops were taken off), so that civilians and children would find them on the ground and then be killed when they opened them! We tried to research this story, and it is unclear whether there is any basis of fact in it, but this type of warfare (dropping exploding pens, lighters, toys, ect) had been attributed to the U.S., German and Soviet forces, and the story has been repeated in other armed conflicts such as Afghanistan in the 1980s and Iraq in the early 2000s. Important Added Info: Note that this is one of a remarkable collection of 14 posters that were printed in Holland during World War II while they were occupied by Nazi Germany. They are all propaganda posters designed to sway the Dutch people to support the Nazis and fear the Allies. These posters are surely incredibly rare (since any surviving ones would have likely been destroyed soon after Holland was liberated, and in addition, there were huge paper shortages at this time. We are auctioning the 14 posters in 14 separate auctions. This is an extremely rare opportunity to purchase one or more of these extremely rare posters, which likely should be displayed in museums. Also note that this poster was folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube. Condition: very good.
