Mather and Company was a printer located in Chicago, Illinois which is best-known for producing Mather Motivational workplace posters in the 1920s. They were inspired by the U.S. government's poster campaign during World War I (WWI), and the 1920s desire for enhancing efficiency in the workplace. At some point in the early to mid 1920s, Charles Mather, the owner of Mather and Company, started producing these "motivational" posters, which encouraged discipline, loyalty, honesty, productivity and featured great artwork by a number of different artists hired by Mather. Unfortunately, the Stock Market Crash in 1929 caused businesses to greatly economize, and Mather stopped producing the motivational posters and they tried to stay in business by also making non-motivational posters, but they could not survive. But the ones that they did create often contained wonderful art and messages!
Artist: Willard Frederic Elmes
Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this special poster!
