It was founded in 1891 by Carl Busch who started out as a weight lifter at fairs. Over time, he recruited more and more artists and organized his first shows. By the turn of the twentieth century, this circus had permanent buildings in Berlin, Vienna, and Hamburg. Harry Houdini first appeared with the Circus Busch in 1908 with his Straight Jacket Escape and Milk Can Escape acts. In 1912, he debuted his famous Water Torture Cell act during his fall tour with Circus Busch. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this German poster! Also note that this poster was printed by Adolph Friedlander to promote Pernelet und seine Krokodile (Pernelet and his Crocodiles), and features artwork of Pernelet sitting on the back of a floating crocodile and feeding raw meat to many others! M. Pernelet was a French naturalist, explorer and animal trainer, and perhaps his best-known act was to hand-feed crocodiles and get them to "sing" (which has been described as "a chorus of discordant and blood-curdling roars"). Also, note that Adolph Friedlander was a famous German lithographer and a publisher from the 1870s to the 1900s. Working out of Hamburg, Germany, he predominantly printed posters for artists, magicians, and circus and vaudeville performers. He passed away in 1904 at the age of 53. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had very minor wear on the folds. It had a 4" tear in the right of the top border that went through the middle of the "H" and went on a diagonal into the top of the second "o". The poster had darkened around the edges and a few tiny bits of paper loss in the blank borders. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. Many years ago, someone mounted it onto a very thin linen and did no restoration. The poster was framed at one time, and it was attached to a mat with pieces of tape in the excess linen around the edges. This wonderful poster will look incredible on the new owner's wall!
