An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) The Bride of Frankenstein, the classic 1935 James Whale Universal monster horror thriller sequel ("The Monster Demands a Mate!"; "The monster thriller"; "Who will be The Bride of Frankenstein. Who will dare?"; the second of the Universal Frankenstein movies, and the only example I am aware of where a sequel is clearly superior to the original movie!; this is James Whale's masterpiece, and almost everyone agrees it is among the finest movies ever made, regardless of genre) starring Boris Karloff (as the Frankenstein monster), Colin Clive (as Dr. Henry Frankenstein), Valerie Hobson (as the bride of Dr. Frankenstein), Elsa Lanchester (in the title role as the bride of the Frankenstein monster, and also as Mary Shelley!), Una O'Connor, Ernest Thesiger (as Dr. Pretorius), E.E. Clive, O.P. Heggie, John Carradine, Dwight Frye (as Karl), Gavin Gordon, and Neil Fitzgerald NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this lobby card has a very unusual history, starting with its discovery in South America 20 years ago (see below). It was first consigned to us in 2004, and the collector who bought it kept it in his collection for 7 years, and then reconsigned it to us in 2011. That collector held it for the last 13 years, and has now reconsigned it to us. So this card has now passed through two collectors' hands over the past two decades, and now will be owned by a third collector! Note that this lobby card has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the lobby card was backed onto a very light paper backing (acid-free), that keeps the "feel" of the lobby card similar to that of the original lobby card. Some restorers prefer to paperback lobby cards on to a heavy backing, while others prefer to use a very lightweight backing. The advantage of a lightweight backing is that the card still "feels" like a regular lobby card, but a heavier backing makes restoration easier to do and less noticeable. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair to good. This card was discovered in South America, where the people who used it, cut off all of the blank borders and the bottom title area of the card, and put a snipe over the upper left of the card with the title in Spanish. Fortunately, the person who did this thought to glue the bottom title area to the back of the card. See our images for an image that shows the front of this card PRIOR to restoration, and also an image of the title area that was glued to the back of the card, and of course, we have an image of the complete restored card. It is difficult to tell from the photos, but the card had a fair amount of surface damage, including in the face of the bride. Whoever restored the card removed the title area from the back of the card, and rejoined it to the top part and recreated the borders, including recreating the missing small writing at the lower left. They then did a lot of restoration throughout the entire card to attempt to repair and hide the surface damage the card had sustained over the years. The result is that the card looks pretty nice from a distance away, but from inches away, it is evident there has been much restoration throughout the entire card. We have included a close-up below of the most important part of the image area and we hope that conveys the amount of restoration this card has had. Obviously this card is very heavily restored. But it is just as obvious that most collectors could never dream of owning a great original Bride of Frankenstein card, so a collector must decide for himself if they can live with this amount of restoration. This is probably the only affordable original Bride of Frankenstein lobby card you will ever see offered! But please do not try to make the card better than it is. Do not bid unless you have fully read the description above and can accept its many defects. The new owner of this card will surely display it on their wall, just as the past two owners did over the past two decades! Learn More about condition grades
