Date Sold 9/3/2020Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) In Old Santa Fe, the 1934 Joseph Kane singing cowboy western musical ("An Unusual Western. Colorful - with Music and A Beautiful Background") starring Ken Maynard, Tarzan (billed as "with his Wonder Horse 'Tarzan'"), Evalyn Knapp, H.B. Warner, Kenneth Thomson, George 'Gabby' Hayes (billed as "George Hayes"), Gene Autry ("Radio's singing cowboy"; "Cowboy idol of the air"), Wheeler Oakman, George Burton, George Chesebro, Smiley Burnette (uncredited in his first film), and Bob Nolan (uncredited as Maynard's singing voice and in his first film). Note that this was Gene Autry's very first movie, although he had been a singing radio cowboy for several years prior to this movie's release, and that many experts on B-Westerns agree that this film is one of the three greatest B-Westerns ever made! Also note that this movie was clearly set in "Old Santa Fe", but we don't know if that meant it was in New Mexico (or maybe Old Mexico!). NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this first release half-sheet! We also previously auctioned the other style of half-sheet, but that was 24 years ago! Note that this poster is very old, and it would not make sense to attempt to roll it, as the paper is fragile and rolling it would likely damage it. Therefore we must be sent in a very large flat package. Please bear that extra shipping cost in mind BEFORE placing a bid on this poster! What IS gelbacking? Learn More Condition: good. The poster was never folded. It had uneven darkening down the left edge, including all of the border and a small but increasing part of the left background and bottom left image. It had some pinholes and tears around the edges, with areas of paper loss in the blank borders near the corners. It had some smudges and faint stains around the edges and a scuff at bottom center. It had a few small glue stains near the middle of the poster running from the bottom of Maynard's hand to the top of the other man's hand. Someone had years ago put some brown paper tape on the back of parts of the borders where there were tears. Someone else somewhat recently gave the poster to a restorer, who used gel backing to allow them to replace the paper loss in the blank borders (without backing the poster), but otherwise, they did no additional restoration. In spite of all of the above, this extremely rare poster wil display pretty well on the new owner's wall, or of course, additional restoration could be performed. Learn More about condition grades
