Note that 20th Century-Fox cast singer Johnnie Ray as one of the family members, thinking the likeable singer would move on to many more roles in their musicals, but unfortunately, he was a gay homosexual male at a time when that was not tolerated in Hollywood, and that surely greatly hurt his career.
