Artist: Bob McCall Important Added Info: Note that another example of this poster was consigned to us with several other similar posters from the same time period, in 2017, by a studio executive who received them when the movies came out, and the other example of this poster sold for $3,961. That example of this poster had several "splits" in it, including one that was 6", and one that was 4 1/2". THIS second example of this poster comes from the same consignor (and it is in better condition than the other example; see our condition grade below). He had planned on keeping it, but has now decided to auction it, and it is the only other example of this poster we are aware of, so it is certainly extremely rare! Exactly what is this poster? We are certain it dates from 1968, when this classic movie first opened. It is a movie poster that measures just under 30" x 40", but it is not printed on paper! Rather, it is printed on a plastic material that is likely acetate. It has full-color printing on both sides, with a tiny "PRINTED IN U.S.A." in the bottom right of the solid background area. We would have to think that this was intended to be displayed in light boxes, but for whatever reason, it either was abandoned before it was ever implemented, or it was tried and quickly abandoned. Given that until we were consigned the first of these posters in 2017, we had never seen another poster like this, we think it is more likely that this concept got abandoned before it started (perhaps the cost of making the posters was too high, or perhaps theaters didn't want to pay to have expensive light boxes installed). The poster is from the Cinerama release of the movie, and it has essentially the same image and taglines as the style A Cinerama one-sheet, but the words "a space odyssey" are red, and there is red in the center of the poster, which is on no other poster from this movie we have ever seen! There is a teaser poster from this movie that has the star child inside a psychedelic eye, which sells for huge amounts of money, and yet there are a number of examples of that poster. This is only one of two examples of this poster we are aware of! If anyone knows more about this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Condition: good to very good. As noted above, this poster was found rolled with other similar posters. Also, as noted above, the previous example of this poster that we auctioned had several "splits" in it, including two long ones (see above). THIS EXAMPLE DOES NOT HAVE ANY SPLITS AT ALL. It has one notable defect. There is significant "rippling" in the poster in the area above the left of the title and extending upward 7", so it includes the bottom part of the space shuttle leaving the space wheel. The poster also has a pronounced curl to it and we don't think that simply flattening it will either "uncurl" it or reduce the rippling in the area described above. Otherwise, the poster is in nice condition, and this example is clearly in much better condition than the previous one with the splits. Possibly the poster can be made to "relax" (which would surely have to be done by a talented professional), and if so, it will be near perfect. If not, however, then one option would be to frame the poster between two sheets of Plexiglas, which would certainly keep the poster completely flat. We highly recommend that bidders on this poster talk to poster restorers or experts in other kinds of restoration BEFORE placing a bid on this poster. It seems to be one of only two examples of this poster that there are, and the new owner absolutely should use the best possible conservation techniques to preserve it. Please be sure to read all of the above carefully and look at our super-sized image BEFORE bidding on this extremely rare and unusual poster! Learn More about condition grades
