Date Sold 1/13/2019Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Autographed Letter (measures 8 1/2" x 10 3/4") (Learn More) May McAvoy was an actress from the 1910s, 1920s, and again in the 1940s and 1950s. Some of her movies include: Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ (the 1925 version!), The Enchanted Cottage, The Jazz Singer, and Lady Windermere's Fan. Note that she got married and retired in 1929, and raised a son, and then returned to appear in movies in minor roles in the 1940s and 1950s. McAvoy passed away in 1984 at the age of 84. Important Added Info: Note that this letter has been personally autographed (signed) by May McAvoy! It is entirely handwritten by her, on her personal stationery, and it has really wonderful content! Apparently, right before she wrote this letter, Miss McAvoy had "a nervous breakdown", following the filming of The Fire Brigade with Charles Ray. It was reported in the newspapers, but then, at the premiere of the movie, Miss McAvoy appeared in person with Mr. Ray and posed for publicity pictures, and the powerful (and cynical) newspaper columnist Louella Parsons wrote a critical story in her column, implying that Miss McAvoy had feigned the nervous breakdown in order to gain publicity for her movie! Miss McAvoy was angered by this, because she felt that it made her "appear ludicrous" and that she had a "voracious appetite for maudlin publicity". So she wrote this letter to Miss Parsons detailing her nervous breakdown and saying that she rose from her sickbed to appear at the premiere, but that she was NOT recovered, and she asks Miss Parsons to write a followup "explanation" in a future column! We don't know if Miss Parsons complied with this request, but it is certainly a fascinating story! As is true of all the signed items we are currently auctioning, we give every buyer 30 days in which to review what they purchased and they can return any item as long as it is within 30 days of the end of the auction.
