Date Sold 6/18/2017Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Style A Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (sometimes called "Treasure of Sierra Madre"), the classic 1948 John Huston (winner of the Best Director Academy Award for this film) gold mining melodrama ("They sold their souls for ....The Treasure of the Sierra Madre"; "Warner Bros. hit a new high in high adventure... Bringing another great best-seller to the screen!"; "The nearer they get to their treasure the farther they get from the law!"; "Based on the Novel by B. Traven"; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; about three men who prospect for gold and the mixed blessings they find when they discover much gold) starring Humphrey Bogart (as Fred C. Dobbs), Walter Huston (winner of the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film), Tim Holt, Bruce Bennett, Barton MacLane, Alfonso Bedoya (as Gold Hat), John Huston (the director, as the man who gives Bogart money three times), and Robert 'Bobby' Blake. Note that the author of the book this classic movie was based on was written by a VERY unusual man known as "B. Traven", and you might want to research him, because it is amazing that no one has made a book about his life! Also note that Tim Holt's father appeared in a tiny cameo role in the "flop house" scene, as a fun favor to his son. Also note that there is an urban legend that Ann Sheridan plays the hooker who Humphrey Bogart sees after he gets cleaned up. Actually, that is not Ann Sheridan in the film, but she DID get made up for that scene, and there are still photos of her, so it is almost true! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that the first release posters and lobby cards from this classic movie are auctioned regularly, EXCEPT for the first release half-sheet, which, for unknown reasons, is incredibly rare! We have only auctioned this half-sheet once before. Note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (except somewhat heavier). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards, and lobby cards. Note that because this poster was paperbacked onto a thicker paper backing, it CAN'T be sent rolled (someone could conceivably roll it or try to do so, but we think it would have a strong chance of lessening its condition, so we will only send it in a large flat package, unless the buyer insists, and then they would be responsible for any damage). What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster had minor wear on the folds. It had pinholes, creases, and small tears around the edges. It had a 3" tear near the middle of the left border, going into the background area. It had some creases, smudges, and scuffs scattered throughout. It had a fine faint scuff line starting in Bogart's shirt and running through his chin and ear, and into the background to the right. It had creases in the top right mountain area and many creases scattered in the top of the image, including two that entered the bottom half of Bogart's face. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to paperbacking. The poster was well backed, and will display well on the new owner's wall, but when you look at it close up, you can clearly see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects.
