A 2009 Re-Release Theatrical Unfolded Cuban Movie Poster (measures 20" x 30" [51 x 76 cm]) (Learn More) City Lights, the classic 1931 Charlie Chaplin silent romantic comedy melodrama (written and directed by Charles Chaplin; Chaplin is a Tramp who befriends a blind flower seller, and he loves her, but is afraid she can't return his love; the movie includes a memorable boxing scene, and a wonderful final scene where the girl is cured of her blindness) starring Charles Chaplin, Virginia Cherrill, Florence Lee, Harry Myers, Al Ernest Garcia, and Hank Mann. Note that Charlie Chaplin stood alone against the coming of sound to movies, and he made this movie as a silent movie, although it had a soundtrack which included the song "Smile", which Chaplin himself wrote. Note that silkscreen (also known as screen printing) is a printing technique whereby a mesh is used to transfer ink onto a poster. Only one color is printed at a time, so several screens must be used to produce a multicolored design, and it is a laborious technique because it is traditionally all done by hand. Because of the rich thickness of the layer of color on the paper and the resulting depth and brilliance achieved through silkscreen printing, this technique was preferred by many artists throughout many cultures and periods.
