Date Sold 10/1/2023Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. a lot of 3 signed original paintings (all have been nicely matted, and they range in size from 10" x 15" to 15 1/2" x 18 1/2") by Joseph McMillan Johnson (see below for much more on him). We previously auctioned a group of five similar original paintings by him, and they sold for $750. Now we are auctioning the remaining ones we have from him, a total of five, AND THERE ARE THREE OF THEM IN THIS AUCTION (and the other two are in a separate auction). These are all we have left from this great artist, so this is the last chance to purchase any of these! Measurements: from 10" x 15" to 15 1/2" x 18 1/2". Joseph McMillan Johnson (also known as Mac Johnson and J. McMillan Johnson) was a Hollywood art director from the 1930s to the 1990s. He was graduated from USC with a degree in architecture before attending Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. He was working for well-known architect Kem Weber when he was hired by David O. Selznick in 1938. He worked as a sketch artist for designs on Gone with the Wind and was heavily involved with the creation of the special effects for The Wizard of Oz. He worked on most of Selznick's major productions, which included: Duel in the Sun, The Paradine Case and Portrait of Jennie (for which he won an Oscar for the visual effects). He also worked on Stormy Weather in 1943, and was a frequent collaborator with Alfred Hitchcock, and To Catch a Thief earned him another Academy Award nomination. He continued to earn Oscar nominations for The Facts of Life, Mutiny on the Bounty, The Greatest Story Ever Told and Ice Station Zebra. He retired in 1971 and passed away in 1990 at the age of 77. Note that these original watercolor paintings have been autographed (signed) by the artist Joseph McMillan Johnson (he signed as "Mac Johnson")! Also note that the items in this lot are mostly from the 1940s. Condition: very good. Each of the paintings was done on illustration board. Each has been matted.
