Date Sold 6/20/2017Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. A Linenbacked Travel Poster (measures 24 3/4" x 40 1/4" [63 x 102 cm]) (Learn More) TWA: New York World's Fair, the 1964 airline aviation airplane travel poster encouraging travelers to use Trans World Airlines when visiting the 1964-65 New York World's Fair. Note that there were many posters for this World's Fair, and most featured the Unisphere, which was the most recognizable image from this World's Fair, and this poster features Unisphere art by David Klein. Also, note that the metal Unisphere, which was created by U.S. Steel for the World's Fair, still stands in Flushing, New York! Artist: David Klein Important Added Info: This is a very unusual poster that has something that we can't explain. We have never auctioned any version of this poster before, and it has wonderful David Klein art of the Unisphere, the most recognizable image associated with this World's Fair. But we searched the Internet, and we found on David Klein's official site an example of this poster, and that one has "NEW YORK WORLD'S FAIR FLY TWA JETS" printed in the top left corner (in the area obviously designed for it, since it is a large orange area on the poster). So the question is, why was this poster made without that printing? It wouldn't make sense as a "teaser", because the tiny jet silhouette in the lower right would not be enough to let people know it was a travel poster, so we instead think this was likely some sort of printer's test of this poster, printed before the text at top left was added. With or without the text, it is certainly incredibly striking art! If anyone knows more about this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster was never folded. It had creases, scuffs, and a few small tears around the edges, with a series of small tears in the bottom of the right blank border. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above.
