An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Danish Movie Poster (measures approximately 24" x 33" [61 x 84 cm]) (Learn More) South: Ernest Shackleton and the Endurance Expedition, the 1920 Frank Hurley Australian/English South Pole Antarctica adventure docudrama (about the 1914-1916 expedition to Antarctica and the subsequent rescue of men trapped in their boat by the ice; "Not a life lost and we have been through Hell.") starring Ernest Shackleton, Captain F. Worsley, Lieutenant J. Stenhouse, Captain L. Hussey, and Dr. McIlroy. Note that this early silent movie was restored by the British Film Institute in 1998 and given a theatrical release! In his day, Shackleton was a famous explorer on a par with Scott and Byrd, but he died in 1922, and he soon became forgotten as an historical footnote, but his story was revived in 1998, along with this movie. His first expedition to the Antarctic resulted in the ship being trapped by ice and crushed, and yet remarkably, everyone survived! Note that in addition to this movie, there was also a U.S. documentary made the following year called "The Bottom of the World", and posters on both are so rare that it can be difficult to know if they are from one movie or the other. If anyone has more information about either of these movies or this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Condition: good to very good. The bottom blank border was trimmed off and there were three areas of paper loss near the center of the bottom border that extended into the tiny bottom credit line. There were some tears around the edges of the poster and a 5" slightly diagonal tear at the top center of the poster that extended into the image background. Other than that tear and minor wear on the foldlines, the image was in pretty nice condition. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The person who did the restoration mounted the poster onto a very thin linen and put three replacement pieces for the missing areas in the bottom center of the poster and a replacement bottom blank border, but otherwise did no restoration to the poster.
