He was born in 1890 in Pittsburgh (even though he seemed European!) to a French father and an Irish mother, and his father disapproved of show business, but while at college, Adolphe changed his major to liberal arts and started appearing in plays. He moved to New York when he was 25, but couldn't make it on Broadway, and appeared in minor movies in the middle 1910s. He served in World War I and then afterwards went behind the camera working as a production manager. In 1921, he moved to Hollywood, and got leading roles in movies and became a major star throughout the 1920s and 1930s, and then he seamlessly switched to character roles. He had a wonderful part in Paths of Glory as the slimy General Broulard near the end of his career. Some of his other movies include: Little Miss Marker, Golden Boy, The Marriage Circle, and Stage Door. He passed away in 1963 at the age of 73. Condition: very good to fine.
