Also included is an ad supplement that has 10 pages, and also a herald that has 4 pages. (Learn More) William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, the 1936 George Cukor Italy romantic family feud tragedy melodrama ("The world's greatest love story!"; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; based on the classic play by William Shakespeare) starring Norma Shearer (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film; in the title role as Juliet), Leslie Howard (in the title role as Romeo), John Barrymore (as Mercutio), Edna May Oliver (as the nurse), Basil Rathbone (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film; as Tybalt), C. Aubrey Smith (as Lord Capulet), Andy Devine, Ralph Forbes (as Paris), Reginald Denny (as Benvolio), and Violet Kember Cooper (as Lady Capulet). Note that one complaint of this film adaptation was that Shearer and Howard were far too old for the characters they played. Howard was 43 years old, and Shearer was 34, whereas Romeo was around 16, and Juliet 13! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this pressbook, and that example was only in "fair to good" condition, and it still sold for $615! Note that when studios would prepare pressbooks they would often include a sample of the herald. Most often, the herald is no longer still with the pressbook. Sometimes, the herald by itself will sell for almost as much as the rest of the entire pressbook! This pressbook contains the original herald which is pictured next to the pressbook below. Also note that pressbooks were prepared prior to a movie being released. Often, changes would be made in a movie advertising campaign (billing of actors, different images, etc.), and the theaters would print up special supplements that they would send out with the pressbooks that had already been printed. These supplements are very rare, far more rare than the pressbooks themselves! Some pressbooks would have no supplements, some would have one, and some would have several. Almost every Academy Award winning movie would have a special "Academy Award winner" supplement. Also note that we have provided an image of the front and back covers of this pressbook, and of course, the winner of this auction will receive the entire single pressbook we are auctioning (plus any supplements or heralds described above)! Also note that this pressbook is complete and uncut! Given that theater owners received pressbooks partly in order to create their newspaper advertising, and quite frequently cut them up for that purpose, it is rare to find a pressbook that IS complete and uncut! Note: We have 18 images of this pressbook, but due to a space limitation, only TEN of the 18 images are displayed above. However, there is a "supersize" link to the right of those images that lets you see the other 8. Condition: good to very good, NO CUTS. The pressbook is complete and uncut. The interior pages of the pressbook have darkened somewhat, typical of MGM pressbooks of this era, but they are not very fragile at all, very unusual for MGM pressbooks of this era. There are small tears down the spine of the covers. The tipped-in herald is in pretty nice condition. The rare supplement (which has ten single-sided pages), which measures the same size as the pressbook, has light brown staining around the edges of all pages and on the back of some pages. See our many images to get a good sense of the condition of this extremely rare pressbook. Learn More about condition grades
