An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Australian One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27 1/4" x 40" [69 x 102 cm]) (Learn More) Eureka Stockade (released in the U.S. as "Massacre Hill"), the 1949 Harry Watt English Ealing Australia Independence historical Gold Rush epic melodrama ("Sweeping Drama of Australia's gold rush!"; "Spectacular drama of Australia's Gold Rush"; set in 1854, when there was a major gold discovery in Australia, which brought many immigrants in search of riches; the British controlled government took a large portion of the miners' discoveries by way of fees and licenses; the miners revolted, and led by an Irish immigrant named Peter Lalor, they were able to win major concessions from the British, which resulted in Australians gaining much more control of their own government a year later) starring Chips Rafferty (as Peter Lalor), Jane Barrett, Jack Lambert, Gordon Jackson (in one of his earliest important roles!), Peter Illng, Ralph Truman, Sydney Loder, and Peter Finch. Note that future star Gordon Jackson was fifth-billed and Peter Finch was tenth-billed! Note that the uprising at the Eureka Stockade in 1854 is one of the most important events in Australia's history, but it did not make the English look well, so it was often downplayed in history books. After director Harry Watt and star Chips Rafferty had had great success in 1946 with "The Overlanders", they decided to tell the "true story" of the Eureka Stockade, and this movie (which, as so often occurs, took some liberties with the truth) was the result, and it is one of the most important early Australian movies. Note that first release Australian material from this movie is incredibly rare! We auctioned a daybill in 2003, and that was the only first release Australian poster we had ever seen until we were consigned a first release Australian one-sheet in 2014. Note that this movie was produced by Ealing Studios, the famous English production company, but it was filmed in Australia. Some call it an English movie, but most call it an Australian movie! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had separation and tiny bits of paper loss in the top quarter of the vertical foldline, with a stain in the background above the man's hat at top center. It had minor wear on the foldlines and tiny pinholes around the edges. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well!
