eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result 8s204 SUPERMAN Belgian 1950 different Ziel art of superhero Kirk Alyn in costume, ultra rare! Date Sold 8/19/2018Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original 1950 (from the first release of this movie in Belgium) Vintage Theatrical Folded Belgian Movie Poster (measures 14 1/4" x 21 3/4" [36 x 55 cm]) (Learn More) Superman, the 1948 Spencer Gordon Bennet & Thomas Carr science fiction (sci-fi) comic book superhero serial ("A Columbia Serial"; "Rocketing Into A Mighty Adventure!"; "Challenged by treachery!"; "Racing toward doom!"; "By arrangement with National Comics Publications, Inc."; "Based on the Superman adventure feature appearing in Superman and Action Comics magazines, in daily and Sunday newspapers coast-to-coast and on the Superman radio program broadcast over the Mutual Network.") starring Kirk Alyn (in the title role as Superman/Clark Kent), Noel Neill (who later reprised her role as Lois Lane in the TV show), Carol Forman (as "Spider Lady"), Tommy Bond (as Jimmy Olsen; best remembered as Butch the bully from the Our Gang series), Pierre Watkin (as Perry White), Wheeler Oakman, Nelson Leigh (as Jor-El), Luana Walters (as Lara), Virginia Carroll (as Martha Kent), and Ed Cassidy (as Eben Kent). Note that Superman was created in 1938 as a comic book hero, but it took ten long years for a movie to be made depicting him (perhaps moviemakers were deterred by the expensive budget required to have Superman perform his great feats of strength and flying!). This item is from that very first movie, the serial entitled "Superman"! Republic Pictures had tried to make a Superman serial in 1941, but DC wanted more money than they were willing to pay, and they ended up making a Captain Marvel serial instead. Two years later, they made the first Batman serial, and it would not be for five more years before they finally made this serial! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Ziel Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this Belgian poster! We have auctioned many thousands of Belgian posters (including a lot from before World War II, but until we were consigned this poster, we had never auctioned it, and we were also consigned a Belgian poster from "Atom Man vs. Superman", and that too we have never auctioned before (and it is in a separate auction). Also note that this serial was not shown in Belgium like it was in the U.S., with one chapter at a time. They made two parts out of the 12 chapters and showed "part 1" at one time and "part 2" at another time. The poster here is from "part 2". We have never auctioned the poster for part 1, and it may have a very similar image, or it may have a completely different image. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Also note that this poster was folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube. Condition: good. The poster has paper loss and light staining in the right corners. It was folded across the middle and it had separation and tiny paper loss in the right 3" of that fold, and someone put tape on the back of that area. They also put tape on the back of small tears in the top, right, and bottom borders. The poster has some stains in the left border, including a larger one that extends into the very back of Superman's cape, but it is not very noticeable at all. There is writing in the top blank background area. Obviously, one would prefer to find a better condition example of this very rare poster, but most of its defects are in the blank borders and in the edges of the image, so it would not be difficult for a talented restorer to make the poster look fantastic, and it would not require much paint restoration within the image.
