An Undated (probably 1947) Re-Release Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Australian Daybill Movie Poster (db; measures 14" x 40" [36 x 102 cm]) (Learn More) Rebecca, the classic 1940 Alfred Hitchcock (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film) romantic love triangle melodrama ("You loved the novel, you'll love the picture."; "Between his lips and hers the shadow of this woman!"; "A lonely man, a lovely girl ...struggling against the secret of Manderley"; "The shadow of a remembered woman came between their lips... But these two had the courage to hope... And to live their love!"; "From the best-selling novel by Daphne de Maurier"; "Gloriously she loved him... though a dread suspicion gnawed at her heart! The secret of Manderley... challenging, mysterious... broods over a powerful drama of two lonely people who lived on courage and hope!"; "Produced by David O. Selznick who made 'Gone With the Wind'"; winner of the Best Picture Academy Award; about a young woman who marries a rich and powerful widower after a short romance, and she feels she is in constant competition with her husband's dead wife, or is she?) starring Laurence Olivier (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; "Hero of Wuthering Heights"), Joan Fontaine (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film; "in her sensational starring debut"), George Sanders, Judith Anderson (nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this film), Gladys Cooper, Nigel Bruce, Reginald Denny, C. Aubrey Smith, and Florence Bates NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is a very odd daybill! What we believe happened to it is that the owner had this poster (which was a 1947 re-release daybill which had been slightly trimmed on three sides) and they took it to a restorer who thought it was a "long" daybill, which had had a lot of trimming, and the restorer then tried to make it what he thought was its original size, so he added a lot of blank space to the top! But actually, the poster likely was only 30 inches long. So the restoration was done incorrectly, and there should be no blank top. The person who had it restored and the restorer who did the work are no longer with us, so it will remain a mystery as to exactly why this occurred!
What IS linenbacking? Learn More UPDATED 02/27/2013: Note that, upon further review, we believe that this is a 1947 re-release daybill and NOT a 1943 re-release long daybill as we initially listed. We have also updated the Important Added info and the Condition section of the auction. Please read both carefully before bidding. Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. See above for how this poster was incorrectly restored to make it look like a "long" daybill, when actually it is not! The poster apparently had a tiny blank top that was trimmed off (Olivier's head extended into the blank area slightly, and the person who trimmed the top trimmed around the top edge of his hair). The right 1/2" of the poster was quite tattered. There were creases, tears, and tiny bits of paper loss on both foldlines, but otherwise the poster was in pretty good condition. As explained above, the person who backed the poster did restoration down the right edge, and they created a large top blank border (thinking it belonged there) and they glued it over the small part of Olivier's hair that originally extended into that blank top (the only thing I can imagine is that the restorer of the poster thought it looked "better" that way). The poster can certainly be displayed just as it is (completely incorrectly restored), but it would make more sense to have the blank top removed so that the top of Olivier's hair can be viewed as intended, and the poster can be its correct size (the new owner will make this decision). Please do not bid on this poster unless you can accept the fact that it was incorrectly restored, and can live with that, or will perform further restoration. Learn More about condition grades
