An Original Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Movie Title Lobby Card (Learn More) A Dog's Life, the 1918 Charlie Chaplin silent screwball comedy ("The one and only Charles Chaplin in his first million dollar picture"; "In his first million dollar comedy"; "His Signature"; "A First National Attraction") starring Charlie Chaplin (Charles Chaplin; as the Tramp), Edna Purviance, Syd Chaplin, Henry Bergman, Charles Reisner, and Brownie the Wonder Dog (in the title role). Note that Chaplin was so incredibly popular in 1918, that First National had to pay him a million dollars per movie to lure him away from his previous studio (which was a staggering amount of money in 1918)! Naturally, they wanted to get some advertising value out of their massive expenditure, so they advertised the movie as "His First Million Dollar Comedy". Brownie the Wonder Dog got his giant break in 1918 playing the title role in this film. This led to major stardom and a series of shorts with his name above the title. He starred in 53 movies through 1923, at which point he hopefully retired at the peak of his fame! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that, in the early days of movie making, when lobby cards were first made (around 1915), studios would issue sets of the cards in two sizes; the regular 11" x 14" size, and a smaller 8" x 10" size. The cards were identical in every way except for the different size. This practice continued through the early 1920s, at which point the studios abandoned the smaller lobby cards, likely because theaters either ordered 11" x 14" lobby cards or 8" x 10" stills, and did not order enough of the 8" x 10" lobby cards to justify them continuing to make them. Note that this is one of an incredibly collection of 24 Charlie Chaplin 8x10 lobby cards and 8x10 stills that was recently discovered. Each of them is being offered in a separate auction. These 8x10 lobby cards and stills have always been incredibly rare (both the first release ones and the 1920s re-release ones). In all our years of auctioning, we have only previously auctioned a handful of these. But in this set of auctions, there are 24 different ones (many with spectacular images of Chaplin from his best movies), and all of them will have new owners when the auctions conclude, because these all start at $1 with no reserve! Condition: very good to fine. There are faint creases in the right corners. Otherwise, the card is in nice condition! Learn More about condition grades
