Note that Mary Astor was just 18 years old when this movie was made! She had been making movies for two years, and had a major success in this movie opposite John Barrymore (Barrymore had requested her to play the female lead), and the 18 year old Mary had an affair with the 42 year old Barrymore. Her parents broke off the affair with Barrymore and virtually kept her a prisoner in their lavish home. Of course, she went on to be a major star of the 1920s through the 1940s.
