An Original Vintage Linenbacked Government Poster (measures 21" x 28" [53 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) National Recovery Administration (NRA) was a New Deal agency established by U.S. president Franklin D. Roosevelt (as part of the National Industrial Recovery Act to fight the Great Depression) in 1933. The goal was to eliminate "cut-throat competition" and to help workers by setting minimum wages and maximum weekly hours, as well as minimum prices at which products could be sold. In 1935, the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously declared that the NRA law was unconstitutional. The NRA quickly stopped operations, but many of its labor provisions reappeared in the National Labor Relations Act, passed later the same year. The long-term result was a surge in the growth and power of unions, which became a core of the New Deal Coalition that dominated national politics for the next three decades. The NRA was symbolized by the Blue Eagle created by Charles Colner, and businesses that supported the NRA put the symbol in their shop windows and on their products. Though membership to the NRA was voluntary, businesses that did not display the eagle were often boycotted, making it seem mandatory for survival to many. Note that though this organization used the acronym "NRA", it had no relationship at all to the National Rifle Association, which used the same acronym and had been founded in 1871, 62 years before this organization began! If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Condition: good. The poster had an area of paper loss in the right of the top border and in the top of the right border, as well as in the bottom corners. There was a long semi-circular tear in the bottom border that extended into the bottom of the "DO" in the tagline. There were some tears in the borders and the poster was folded once in each direction, and there were some tears and tiny areas of paper loss on both foldlines. There were some smudges and scuffs scattered throughout the poster. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can clearly see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects. Learn More about condition grades
