Date Sold 5/10/2022 Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. 3 Original Vintage Theatrical (measure from 7" x 8 3/4" [18 x 22 cm] to 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm]) Movie Stills (Learn More) Sullivan's Travels, the classic 1941 Preston Sturges movie acting comedy ("Veronica Lake's on the take"; "Written and Directed by Preston Sturges"; about a Hollywood director who pretends to be a hobo in order to make a more realistic movie about the troubles of the poor, but he comes to realize that they don't want to see such a movie, and that they just want to get their mind off their troubles) starring Joel McCrea (in the title role as John Lloyd Sullivan), Veronica Lake, Robert Warwick, William Demarest, Margaret Hayes, Porter Hall, Franklin Pangborn, Eric Blore, and Esther Howard. Note that Veronica Lake was far along in her pregnancy (six months) when she signed to do this movie, but she was able to hide that fact from Preston Sturges. But as filming continued, it became painfully obvious, and Sturges became furious, but all he could do was "shoot around it", and part of the way this was done was by having her dress in baggy "men's" tramp clothes, which hid her figure, but which reduced her sex appeal considerably! Important Added Info: Note that this set of stills (and a number of others, both sets and singles) come from a recently discovered collection of mostly 1930s stills (but with some from the 1920s, and some from the 1940s and 1950s) that came from the estate of a longtime journalist who wrote about these movies and visited the sets of many movies and were given these stills at that time. They are all rare original stills from the first release of the movies, and some have cool candid images. We auctioned a similar group of stills from this wonderful collection in our auctions that closed April 12, 2022, and now we are auctioning almost all of the remaining stills from this collection (in singles and sets, just as they were last time). After this set of auctions, there will be only a handful left from this collection, so this is pretty much your last opportunity to acquire these extremely rare stills, including some from movies you almost never see anything from!
